PoolSwimming pools are a great value added feature for any home, especially in Arizona where our climate allows for pool recreation nearly year round. Having a pool is a responsibility however, as a pool in the backyard can be dangerous for children and pets.  Here are a few tips to help keep you and your family safe.

Never leave children unattended in or with easy access to your pool.  Not even for a moment.

By law you must install a fence to seperate your house from your pool. A majority of children who drown in pools do so after wandering out of the house.  Make sure your fence is installed to completely seperate your pool from your house and yard, and uses self closing gates and latches.  Contact your local athourities for specific regulations.

A powered safety cover is an excellent safety addition to fencing, but should not be used in its place.

Don't let equipment give you a false sense of security, even a fenced and covered pool cannot prevent all drownings.

Keep appropriate rescue equipment within easy access of the pool.  Shepherd's hooks, life preservers and a telephone are all vital safety tools.

Do not place children in the pool with air filled "swimming aids" such as arm floatation devices.  They are not in any way a substitute for a life vest and should not be relied upon for safety.

Remove any and all toys from the pool and pool area so children aren't drawn to try to enter the pool to retrieve them.

Anyone responsible for monitoring the pool and children in the pool should learn CPR and have the physical ability to rescue a child should the need arise.
